How can a home energy audit benefit you?

A properly done energy audit can:

• Improve your home’s comfort. HEAT will provide a roadmap to balance the temperatures of bedrooms and other potential hot or cold spots in your home.

• Decrease your energy bill – sometimes drastically. HEAT has helped its customers save an average of 25 percent on their energy bills, with some savings as high as 65 percent.

• Educate you. HEAT will help you understand what is causing your high bills, discomfort, dust and other issues, and the most cost-effective way to fix them.

• Possibly save your life. We have found hundreds of potentially life-threatening issues, such as disconnected furnace and water heater flues, exposed wires, cracked trusses, crushed clothes dryer ducts, hidden water leakage, etc.

Comfort and energy savings is a one-two punch. You need an efficient home, but you also need a plan to be efficient; you need good habits, and it doesn’t have to be living a spartan life with 85-degree thermostat settings. HEAT’s goal is to bring you efficient comfort.

It saddens me to see so many people posting on social media about suffering high electric bills and hot/cold homes. But solving the problem isn’t a mystery, at least from a scientific standpoint. You keep your house cool by removing more units of heat from your home than the weather and internal components and beings put into it. You heat a home by moving more heat into it than is lost to the attic and exterior.

Two people you should call: your HVAC company, to ensure that the actual HVAC system is working properly; and a home energy auditor, to find the other issues that are contributing to your home’s discomfort. I have been the latter since 2009, and I can help you.
